In Chapter II, in order to develop an insight into the nature of the object that is attempted to be taught, poetic language is explored. In addition to the definition of some terms related to poetry, the difficulties of teaching/ negotiating meaning from the poem are stated. Moreover, the contributions of English poetry to English language learning are defended against the opposition to teaching poetry. Also some criteria for selecting poems are suggested. In Chapter III, previous and current approaches and methods of teaching poetry, including their relevant techniques and activities, are reviewed. In Chapter Iv`, some suggested principles to be taken into consideration in teaching poetry are given.
