ABSTRACT INVESTIGATION OF BESNI FOLK CULTURE E. Dilek DA?LARAŞAR MSc Thesis, Department Of Turkish Language And Literature Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erman ARTUN Sep, 2002, viii+163 Pages In this study, it is considered Besni's cultural features that is one of the piece of Turkey's culture. When it is looked into the angle of the folk culture and the folk literature, Besni, having very rich datas, with its long historical background, constitutes by itself a culture and a life style in the past and now, too. Individual prepares himself to his new life with various practices and customs at the birth, marriage and death that are as turning point in the individual life and are called as transition period in the folk culture. It is applied various practice in the period of birth, marriage and death in Besni. There are a lot of practices made after the birth event right along with before and during the birth. Forty days after the baby's birth are very important. It is aimed to make the individual happy in her/his new starting life with the customs, applied during the marriage period. The aims of death period customs and practices are to ease the transition dead person into the other world, to provide his/her comfort there and repair his family's deprivation. The Islamic practices are seen intensively in the death period. The Bairams, the ceremonies and the celebrations which are another piece of the folk culture are performed carefully in Besni. In Besni, the folk beliefs are very much and very strong Besni has a very rich and proper cuisine. Besni has very rich datas when we looked into the angle of its folk literature production. Besides the expressing of tales and legends as the folk songs, lulabies, manias, anonymous poems are widely known, too. As a cliche the proverbs, the idioms, the riddles, the prayers, the curses and oathes etc. it has very rich and proper structure. In this study, it is aimed to contribute to the Turkish culture by utilizing disorganized and individual production which was made at this field before.
