Abstract
83 SUMMARY The purpose of the present study was to determine the self- esteem level of university students and to specify the factors related to self-esteem. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Symptom Check List (SCL-90- R) and A Brief Questionnaire were used to gather data from 120 male and 120 female students attending Archeology, Pharmacy and Agriculture Departments of the Aegean University. Acording to the result of the study, self-esteem level of the university students was found to be high. Self-esteem was also found significantly differ according to academic achievement, difficulty in making friends, to be in the desired department, satisfaction with the department, satisfaction with his/her own income, being active in leisure time, his/her look at future, number of siblings, parents' expression of affection, relationship with parents, satisfaction with the family's income. On the other side, self-esteem was found not to differ according to gender, age, department, year, frequency of participation in class, parents' education, general attitude of the family towards the subject. Another finding of the study was the negative relationship between self-esteem and psychiatric semptom level.84 Finally, the finding of the study were discussed in the light of the previous findings and explained on a hypothetical level to provide a starting point for the future research.
