The Use of English modal auxiliaries by Turkish EFL students

Abstract

ÖZET Bu tezin genel amacı Türkçe ve İngilizce'de kipleri (kipli yapıları) anlatmada kullanılan gramatik yapıları karşılaştırmak ve aralarındaki ortak anlatım biçimlerini bulmaktadır. Ayrıca İngilizce'de ki kipli yapıların Türk öğrenciler tarafından hangi sırayı izleyerek kullanıldığı ve bu kullanım sırasının bu yapıların kullanım -sıklıklarıyla (frekans) ilgili olup olmadığı araştırılmıştır. I, bölümde tezin amacı, problem ve sınırlılıklar verilmiştir. II. bölümde İngilizce'de kullanılan kip anlatan yapılar anlamsal (semantic) açıdan ele alınmıştır. II. bö lümde Türkçe'de İngilizce'de ki kip anlatan yapıları anlatmada kullanılan gramatik yapılar ele alınmıştır. Kullanılan bu gramatik yapılar arasındaki kullanım ortaklığı da bu bölümde vurgulanmış. Ortaklığın Türkçe ile İngilizce arasında gramatik, İngilizce'de ise anlamsal olduğu ayrıca belirtilmiştir. IV. bölümde sorulan sorulara cevap bulmak için yapılan testler, istatistikler, deneklerin seçimi, testlerin yapılışı ve değerlendirilmesi açıklanmıştır. V. bölümde testler sonucunda elde edilen veriler tablolar yardımıyla belirtilmiştir. VI. bölümde sonuçlar tartışılmış, sorulan sorulara cevap bulunup bulunmadığı incelenmiş ve bu konuda yapılacak araştırmalar için öneriler getirilmiştir.

ıı - ABSTRACT The main aim of this study is to find out (the grammatical overlap between the two languages Turkish- English) and the semantic overlap within English in expressing modality and the relation between the use and frequency of English modal auxiliaries. To achieve this aim subjects were given a completion test and a translation test. The grammatical overlap between two languages was found by means of these tests. In order to find the relation between the use and frequency of modal auxiliaries the frequency counts of each English modal auxiliary was done (by examining nine different type of texts). A correlation was done to see if there is any relation, between subjects1 level of English and their use of English modal auxiliaries. In the first chapter, the grammatical overlap between the two languages is mentioned generally. In the second chapter each English modal auxiliary was examined functionally and also the semantic overlap within the English language is mentioned. The structural usage of modal auxiliaries is also studied. In the third chapter, the Turkish modal suffixes that are used to express modality are examined functionally. A comparison, explaining the overlap between the two languages in expressing modality was made. In the fourth chapter, the research desigja, tests, selection of subjects and limitations are stated. In the fifth chapter the results of the tests and frequency counts were given by using statistical techniques. The result of the correlation was also included in this..chapter. In the sixth chapter, the interpretation of the results was done. It is found out that there is a grammatical overlap between the two languages. As one modal auxiliary is used to express more than one semantic function, the semantic overlap within the English language became clearer. It is also found out that Turkish students have no difficulty in using English modal auxiliaries structurally. A corelation was found between the use of English modal auxiliaries and their frequency. That meant the frequent they are, the higher they are in the order of use. Suggestions were also included in the sixth chapter.
