Abstract
Functional neuromuscular stimulation refers to a widecollection of techniques for restoring the lost functionsof the paralyzed limbs and organs by electrical stimulationof the excitable tissues. It is a relatively new anddeveloping subject and little is known about its lifeimproving effects in the medical environments. Itchallenges and probably would sUbstitute several surgicaland conventional medical rehabilitative methods. The first part of this thesis is a comprehensivereview of what has been done so far in this areaA first attempt to restore the function of theparalyzed eyelids is described in order to prevent dry eyesyndrome and blindness due to eventually developingkeratitis, inflammation of the cornea. For simultaneousclosure of eyelids, it has been suggested that the EMGactivity of the intact eyelid may provide necessary controlsignals. Without significant delay a stimulator isactivated and hence the paralyzed eyelid is stimulated. Theapplicability of this method is discussed.KEY WORDS : Functional Neuromuscular StimulationElectrical stimulation of TissueParalyzed eyelids
