The Code of honour in the east and in the west

Abstract

ÖZETÇE Biz bu çalışmamızda, Feodalizm, Asya Tipi Üretim Tarzı ve Doğu Despotizmi gibi birtakım makro modeller çerçevesinde sürdürülmekte olan klasik Doğu-Batı karşılaş tı rmal arı na yeni ve değişik bir boyut kazandırmaya çalıştık. Bu amaçla, hem Doğu'da, hem de Batı'da kendine özgü niteliklere bürünen fakat aynı zamanda sosyal tarih açısından belli bir evrenselliği de içinde barındıran bir olguyu ele aldık: bu olgu onur sorunundan başka birşey değildir. Gerek özgül, gerekse evrensel olmak üzere, tüm yönleriyle bu sorun, bir yandan klasik tartışmaların tersine Doğu-Batı ikilemine getirmeye çalıştığımız yaklaşımın bir mikro model üzerinde temellenmesini sağlarken, bir yandan da her iki dünyanın kendine özgü insan ilişkilerini bireysellik potansiyeli açısından karşılaştırmamızı olanaklı kılmıştır. İşte, genel olarak sözünü ettiğimiz bu yöntemlere dayanarak geliştirdiğimiz bakış açısı sayesinde, onur mücadelesinin Doğu'da kandovöst biçiminde gerçekleşerek koli ekti f, Batı'da ise düello biçiminde gerçekleşerek bireysel bir nitelik taşıdığını; ve bu durumun, hem bazı ortak dinamiklerin her iki bölgeye göre farklılaşmasından, hem de tümüyle birbirinden farklı başka dinamiklerin devreye girmesinden kaynaklandığını anlama imkanımız oldu.

II ABSTRACT In this study, we have tried to add a new dimension to the comparative discussions of the fast-West dichotomy, which were based upon some macro models like Feudalism.. Asiatic Mode of Production and Oriental Despotism. To be able to do this, we have employed a certain phenomenon which, while being characterised by a number of fairly specific aspects in the East and in the West, has yet an undoubted universality perse: This phenomenon is nothing but the problem of honour. This problem as such, with all its specific and universal features, has enabled us to formulate our perspective, differently from the classical approaches, on a micro model on the one hand, and to compare the unique forms of human relations which are endemic to the social natures of the two worlds from the point of view of the potential of individual autonomy, on the other. Thus, by this line of discussion worked out mainly with such methods, we have come to realise that the strife for honour in the East used to substantiate itself in the form of the blood-feud, i.e., in a collective manner, and it used to assert itself in the West by means of the duel, that is, in an individual fashion, and that these variations in honourific contentions came out as a result not only of the differentiation of the same factors commonly characterising the two regions, but also of some other entirely different dynamics.
