A Preliminary study towards the development of the Turkish form of the child observation record (COR)

Abstract

ÖZET Bu tez 1987 yılında High/Scope Educational Research Foundation tarafından geliştirilen (Child Observation Record) Çocuk Gözlem Formu' nun Türkçe'ye tercümesi ve güvenirlik çalışmasını içermektedir. Çalışma üç aşamada yürütülmüştür-, Çocuk Gözlem Formu' nun Türkçe'ye çevrilmesi, Türkçe formun dilsel eşitlik ve güvenirlik çalışmaları. Çeviri aşamasında, orijinal ingilizce form,, iki dili de çok iyi bilen üç kişi tarafından Türkçe'ye ve başka üç kişi tarafından tekrar İngilizce'ye çevrildi. Bu son çeviriler orijinal ingilizce form ile karşılaştırıldı ve bazı değişikliklerden sonra Çocuk Gözlem Formu'nun ilk Türkçe formu elde edildi. Türkçe formun dilsel eşitlik çalışmasında Türkçe ve İngilizce formları kullanan iki gözlemci beş ve altı yaşlarındaki 10 çocuğu gözlemlediler, iki gözlemci arasındaki anlaşma yüzdeleri, Pearson korelasyonları, Rulon katsayısı, işaret ve t-test analizlerinin sonuçları, gözlenen maddelerin büyük bir çoğunluğunun dilsel açıdan eşit olduğunu destekledi. Çalışmanın güvenirlik bölümü iki aşamada gerçekleşti; gözlemciler arasındaki güvenirlik ve Türkçe formun içtutarlılığı. Gözlemciler arasındaki güvenirliği saptamak için, üç gözlemcinin oluşturduğu iki çift 'in herbiri 3 ile 6 yaşları arasında 15'er çocuk gözlemledi. Gözlemciler arasındaki anlaşma yüzdeleri, Pearson korelasyonları, Rulon katsayısı, işaret ve t-test analizleri maddelerin büyük bir çoğunluğunun güvenilir olduğunu gösterdi. tçtutarlık çalışması ise herbir gözlemci ile 15 çocuk gözleyen (toplam 30 çocuk) birinci gözlemcinin verileri ile vigerçekleştirildi. Bu aşamada daha uygun analizler kullanmak amacı ile Çocuk Gözlem Formu standardize edildi. Analizlerden biri olarak Cronbach Alpha katsayısı hesaplandı. Ayrıca madde-toplam, madde-artan, alttest-toplam, alttest-artan korelasyonları Pearson korelasyon formülü ile hesaplandı. İçtutarlık çalışmasında son olarak her alt test için Horst katsayısı da hesaplandı. Korelasyonlar çok yüksek çıkmamasına ragmen analizlerin sonuçları, dilsel eşitlik çalışması ile aynı doğrultudaydı. Bu araştırmanın sonuçları bazı maddelerde birkaç değişiklik yapıldıktan sonra Türkçe form'un İngilizce form ile dil yönünden eş ve güvenilir olabileceğini işaret etmektedir. Böylece Çocuk Gözlem Formu okul öncesi eğitimi alanında kullanıma sunulabilecektir. vii

ABSTRACT This thesis is based on a study about the Turkish translation and reliability study of the Child Observation Record (COR), developed by the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation in 1987. The study was carried out in three phases; the translation of the COR, the transliteral equivalence and reliability studies of the Turkish form of the COR. In the translation phase, the original English form was translated by three bi Unguals into Turkish and back translated by three bilingual individuals. These back translations were checked against the original English scale and after some modifications, the initial Turkish form of the COR was obtained. In the transliteral equivalence study, two observers observed 10 children of ages 5 and 6. The results of the agreement percentages, Pearson correlations, Rulon estimate, sign and t-test analyses indicated that a majority of the items were transliterally equivalent. The reliability study incorporated two parts; the inter observer reliability and the internal consistency of the translated COR. In the inter observer reliability study, three observers who formulated two pairs, observed 15 children each between the age three to six in two centers. The results indicated that the majority of the items were found to be reliable by the agreement percentages, Pearson correlations, Rulon estimate, sign and t-test results. ivThe internal consistency was carried out with data of one observer who observed 30 children (15 with each observer). As the COR was a three to seven point scale, the data of this observer was standardized to a four point scale in order to apply appropriate statistical analyses. The Cronbach's alpha technique was utilized as one of the analysis. The item-total, item-remainder and subscale-total and subscale-remainder correlations were carried out by the Pearson product moment correlation technique. The Horst reliability estimate was also calculated for every subscale with respect to the total scale. Although the correlations were not very high the results of these analyses were in line with the inter observer reliability and transliteral equivalence study results. The results of this study indicate that with some revision of certain items, the Turkish COR will be similar to the original English COR in terms of translation, and that it will hopefully be used in the field of early childhood education.
