Early republican secularism in Turkey: A theoretical approach

Abstract

ÖZET Bu çalışma sekülerizm teorilerini özetliyerek bunları Türkiye örneğine bağlar. Tarihsel şekli itibarıyla radikal devlet sekülarizmi örneği olan Türkiye'de sekülerleşme süreci düşünsel boyutu açısından batıdaki deneyimden farksızdır. Sekülerleşme dinin her alanda otoritesini yitirmesi ve yerini modernizme bırakmasıdır. Bu süreç öncelikle ve özellikle dinsel dünya görüşünün veya kavramsal dünyasının modern/ seküler dünya görüşe dönüşmesi sürecidir. Sekülarist söylemi belirleyen modern/seküler söylemin temel temalarının ideolojik şeklidir. Türkiye'de sekülerleşme sürecini analiz etmek için kurumsal değişiklikleri vurgulamak yerine öncelikle kavramsal dönüşümün boyutlarını irdelemek gerekir.

ABSTRACT This study reviews the theories on secularization and relate them to the Turkish experience. It claims that the Turkish experience of secularization, as a historical example of radical state secularism, does not differ from the secularization experience of the Western world, it is basically the same process in terms of the ideational content of the historical transformation seen first in the Christian West. Secularization is the decline of religious authority and the process of the takeover of modernity. This process first and foremost is the process of the replacement of the religious worldviews or conceptual worlds by that of modern. The basic themes of secular/modern discourse determines the basic themes of secularist argument, in the form of an ideology, in Turkey. In order to analyse the process of secularization in Turkey one first has to consider the extent of the conceptual transformaton to modernity/secularity rather than emphasizing the extent of institutional changes.
