Rebels against modernism Philip Larkin and Orhan Veli Kanık in the context of the movement in England and the Garip in Turkey

Abstract

KISA ÖZET Bu çalışmanın amacı İngiltere'deki The Movement ve' Türkiye'deki Garip hareketleri bağlamında Philip Larkin ve Orhan Veli Kanık 'in ortak bir tavır olarak Modernizm'e karşı çıkışlarını ortaya koymaktır. Her iki şair de eserlerinde özellikle `zaman, gelenek ve poetika` konularında Modernist lere ters düşmüşlerdir. Modernist ler `gecmiş`te i yaşarken onlar `şimdi `de kalmayı seçmişler, gelenek kavramına verilen aşırı öneme karşı çıkmışlar ve Modernist dönemin araya girmesiyle bozulduğuna inandıkları, şair, şiir. okuyucu arasındaki dengeyi yeniden kurmaya çalışmışlardır.

ABSTRACT This study attempts to show the anti-Modernist attitude common to the poetry of Philip Larkin and Orhan Veli Kanık in the context of The Movement in England and The Garip in Turkey. Both poets wrote in reaction to the Modernists, rebelling against them especially on their handling of time, tradition and poetics. While the Modernists lived in the `past`, they chose to stay in the `present`; they rejected the importance attached to tradition and they attempted to restore the balance between the poet, the work and the reader, which they claimed was lost during the Modernist period.
