Abstract
İkinci bölümde `Riskteki Değer`(VAR) in tanımı yapılmıştır. Yöntem gözlem diliminde portföyün değişmediğini varsaymaktadır. Üç hesaplama yöntemi açıklanmıştır. Uygulamada Varyans-Kovaryans metodu incelenmiştir. Beş farklı metot birbirleriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. On tane hisse senedi seçilmiş ve bin tane portföy oluşturulmuştur. ABSTRACT Value At Risk: An Application On The Istanbul Stock Exchange by Ceyda Örmeci Volatility in the market provokes the uncertainty of the returns. There are many ways to measure this volatility in the market. Recently, `Value At Risk` is the one widely used in the world. First, risks in the market are explained. In the second part, Value At Risk (VAR) is defined. Value at risk is a general concept to address market risk. It shows the worst expected loss over a target horizon within a certain confidence level. Value at risk relies on the assumption that the portfolio composition does not change over target horizon. The computation of value at risk is classified in three groups, Variance- Covariance Approach, Historical Simulation and Monte Carlo Simulation. In the application, variance-covariance method was used. Five different methods, three equally weighted moving average method (10, 25 and 100 week) and two exponentially weighted moving average method (A.=0.94 and X=0.97), were compared. A thousand portfolios comprising 10 stocks were composed. Weekly IMKB data were used to calculate the returns from 1988 to 1998. The research showed that when the time period or the weights of the data increase, the methods produce high level of value at risk measures. The method using longer time period tends to produce less variable results than those using short time period or giving more weight to recent data do. iv
