Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine a possible relationship betweeneating disorders and sexual abuse. The relationship between abuse variables(childhood sexual experiences, abuse in pre-adolescence and adolescence, andunwanted sexual experiences at university), mediating variables (family andperfectionism variables), and eating variables (abnormal eating attitudes andbulimia and anorexia like eating attitudes) were investigated. The subject sample consisted of 532 Turkish female undergraduateBogazi<;i university and Marmara University nursing students in istanbul. TheSetting Conditions for Anorexia Nervosa Scale (SCANS), The Positive andNegative Perfectionism Scale (PANPS), The Need for Control Scale (NCS), TheEating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), and Sexual Abuse Questionnaire were theinstruments of the study. The results showed that sexual abuse had some direct effects on eatingattitudes, as well as an indirect effect through the mediating variables. A twowayrelationship between the abuse variables and mediating variables wasfound. A similar two-way relationship between mediating variables and eatingvariables was also established. A model for the development of abnormal eatingattitudes as a result of sexual abuse was proposed.v
