Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that a group of semantically basic verbs can be viewed as derived from the most basic verb be. The basic verbs are defined as those which do not entail any other verb with the same argument and adjunct structure. These verbs can be listed as: keep, go, take, work, run, live, perceive and speak. This thesis proposes three mechanisms to derive the verbs listed above from the basic verb be. The first mechanism adds an argument to the source verb's argument structure. The second mechanism called promT, replaces the thematic role of an argument of the source verb with a role designated to be higher on the thematic hierarchy than the original role. The third mechanism which is called promS, replaces the selectional restriction of an argument of the source verb with a restriction designated to be higher on the selectional restriction hierarchy than the original restriction. This thesis further proposes that from the set of basic verbs which all turn out to encode duration, it is possible to derive new verbs by manipulating their event structure. More specifically, it is shown that the starting and the ending points of a durational verb such as live correspond to two punctual verbs, i.e. be born and die respectively. By delineating the semantic relations among basic verbs, this thesis sorts out the nature of systematicity in verbal meaning.
