Ten thousands of people died, while almost twice as many were injured. In addition to the costly damage of the earthquake, some preliminary studies and hospital records indicated that the earthquake created detrimental psychological effects on the victims. In addition to the trauma caused by the earthquake itself, parental attitudes and reactions can affect children. Parents are viewed as models for coping who influence children through observational learning processes. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the relation between the psychological well-being of children and stress levels and coping styles of mothers in an earthquake situation. The sample was 2140 individuals, consisting of mothers and children who were exposed to the Marmara earthquake at different levels. Data were collected on mothers' level of psychological distress, impact of event, depression, coping styles and children's level of self-concept, anxiety, depression and hopelessness. Results indicated that earthquakehas an impact both on children's psychological well-being and mothers' stress independently. Comparisons between the scores of subjects with different levels of exposure to the earthquake showed that mothers' stress measures and children's depression and hopelessness scores were affected by the earthquake. Weaker relations than expected were observed between mothers' stress levels and coping styles and children's psychological well-being. VI
