Abstract
This thesis aims to display how the critical theories of Mikhail Bakhtinand Umberto Eco can be conjoined in order to found the basics of a newsemiotics (the semiotics of the carnival) that will appreciate the stanceof the aesthetic idiolect of literary works with respect to contemporarysemiotics. The thesis also includes an application of carnival semiotics inthe Sirens-episode of Ulysses by James Joyce.
