Abstract
The understanding of the Turkish expansion in western Anatolia in the late thirteenthand early fourteenth centuries and the Byzantine reaction to this expansion are two aimsof this thesis. In an attempt to highlight the nature of the developments in the region, Istudied the political, social and religious state of both the Byzantine and the Turkishsides in the period in question. Reaching the conclusion that the late Byzantine Empireand the Seljuk state were going through a process of decentralization, I argue that therewas no more a center and a frontier in the region. The rise of certain political powerholders and the Islamization process that the local Christians went through took place inthe context of this polycentric political and social environment. I believe that thisapproach could provide a fresh outlook on the question of how the Turks expanded inAnatolia.
