Abstract
Kontrol grubu A, 29 öğretmenden oluşmaktaydı. An Evaluation Study of a Basic Disaster Awareness Training Program By Meltem Aydoğdu This study investigated the effects of a basic disaster awareness training and explored factors, which had a role in the outcome of the training, named ABCD, and implemented by the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute. With this aim, 59 teachers involved in ABCD training, who formed the experimental group, were given pre training questionnaires, which assessed their attitudes about preparedness, their previous experience with the earthquakes and their trait anxiety. Also, these teachers were given a knowledge test, which assessed their degree of information and a questionnaire, which assessed their satisfaction with the training at the end of training. The experimental group teachers were contacted four months later for follow up interviews and were given a checklist to assess the number of precautions taken. 29 teachers formed the control group A and they were contrasted with the experimental group on knowledge test scores and number of precautions taken. It was found that the experimental group got higher scores on the knowledge test and had taken more precautions than the control group. 37 participants from various backgrounds formed control group B to assess the validity of the knowledge test. Again, the control group B's test scores were lower than the experimental group and showed that information about the issue is necessary in order to be successful in the test. With regard to possible factors affecting the outcome of the training program, none of independent variables was significant in explaining post-training precautions. STAI scores and attending another seminar before the ABCD training were significant in explaining pre training precautions. Teachers who had lower scores on STAI and who had been involved in seminars before the ABCD training had taken a higher number of precautions before the training. Related to the differences between IVpre training precautions and after training precautions, teachers who had more experience with previous earthquakes, had lower difference scores in terms of number of precautions. Overall, ABCD training was successful in increasing participants' knowledge and number of precautions.
