Oxford Reading Tree' den on adet hikaye kitabı seçilmiştir. Her hikayenin bilinmeyen kelimeleri listelenmiştir. Aynca, deney grubu hatırda tutma testinde kontrol grubundan daha fazla kelime hatırlamıştır. vı ABSTRACT The influence of storytelling on the development and retention of L2 vocabulary in child L2 learners. by Esra Yenici The present study investigates the influence of storytelling on the development and retention of L2 vocabulary in child L2 learners. Sixty-seven third grade students from a private primary school were the subjects of this study. The students were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected by means of a pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest. Moreover, field notes were taken and four lessons were videotaped by the researcher. Both groups were pretested before the classroom practices. The groups were presented new vocabulary items using stories or flashcards and wordcards. Ten story books were selected from Oxford Reading Tree. The unknown words from each story were listed. The experimental group was presented the new vocabulary items using big story books, story sequence cards and story handouts. The control group was exposed to the new vocabulary items by means of flashcards, wordcards, vocabulary handouts and crossword puzzles. A posttest was administered to find out whether any differences existed in vocabulary learning of both groups. Three weeks after the classroom practices terminated, a delayed posttest was given to the subjects. Subjects' IVtest scores were analyzed by a series of t-tests. The results suggested that there was not a significant difference between the experimental and control group in the posttest. However, in the delayed posttest the subjects in the experimental group recalled more words than the control group.
