Abstract
Participants of this study were 538 female and 744 male adolescents attending three high schools in grades Lycee I, II and III. Coping strategies were measured by the Turkish Form of the Revised Ways of Coping Inventory. The measure was revised by factor analysis and a new factor called Seeking Family Support was found. T-tests and one-way analysis of variance were used to examine the influence of gender and level of stress on the coping strategies of adolescents, respectively. Results indicated that both variables had an influence on the coping strategies of adolescents. Problem Solving, Seeking Social Support and Seeking Family Support strategies were significantly higher in females while Avoiding strategy was significantly higher in males. Stress levels had a linear influence on the use of Wishful Thinking and Self-Blame strategy. The use of this strategy was significantly higher for the high stress group than the medium stress group and the medium stress group used this strategy significantly higher than the low stress group. Medium stress group used Problem Solving strategy significantly higher than high and low stress groups while the medium stress group used Seeking Family and Social Support strategies significantly higher than the low stress group without any IVsignificant differences found between medium and high stress groups. There were no significant differences found in the use of Avoidance strategy by level of stress (243 words).
