Abstract
The Effects and Therapeutic Factors Involved in Short-Term Semi-Structured Support Group Intervention for Enhancing Adjustment of Freshman in Transition to University by Naci Serhat Türktan This study aimed to examine the effects of a short-term semi-structured support group intervention on the college adjustment process of freshmen students at Boğaziçi University which is a prominent public university in Istanbul-Turkey. In addition to this, it was also aimed to examine the therapeutic factors involved in this group process. For these purposes, a short-term semi-structured support group intervention with a duration of 8 weeks was conducted for those volunteering freshmen students (N=16) enrolled in the English Preparatory School of Boğaziçi University during the Spring semester of 2002. To assess whether this intervention had an effect on college adjustment, those students who participated in these support groups were asked to fill in the Turkish version of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) both before (March 2002) and after the group intervention (June 2002). The control group for this study consisted of another group of voluntary freshmen students chosen randomly among the students of the English Preparatory School (N=45) and they were also administered the same instrument in March and June 2002 without having any intervention during this period. Finally, the therapeutic factors involved in this support group process were assessed by administering the Turkish version of the Therapeutic Factors Inventory (TFI) to those freshmen students who participated in the support groups. vIt was found that participation in the support groups had a positive effect on overall college adjustment as well as on all specific aspects of college adjustment (academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, attachment to college). Furthermore, the results revealed that the most helpful therapeutic factors involved in the support group process were `cohesion`, `universality`, and `development of socialization techniques`. Finally, `imparting information`, `imitative learning`, and `corrective recapitulation of the family` were found as the least helpful therapeutic factors among others. VI
