Abstract
Mevcut çalışmanın amacı, Yaşar Kemal'in romanlarının İngilizce'de yeniden oluşturulması sürecinde Thilda Kemal'in rolünü ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu sorular, `Thilda Kemal'in, Yaşar Kemal'in romanlarının İngilizce'de yeniden yaratılma sürecindeki rolü nedir?` ve `Kullandığı çeviri stratejilerinin, Yaşar Kemal'in erek dilde yemden oluşturulan edebiyatı üzerine etkileri nelerdir?` şeklinde özetlenebilir. The aim of this study is to reveal Thilda Kemal's role as a translator in therecreation of Ya~arK emal's literature in English. In this study, `The Wind from thePlain` trilogy, which includes the novels The Wind, from the Plain (1963) (OrfaDirek, 1960), Iron Earth, Copper Sky (1974) (Yer Llemir Gijk Bakzr, 1963) and TheUndying Grass (1977) (Olmez Otu, 1968), is described and discussed according to atarget-orie~~teadp proach. The overall objective of these case studies is to identi6 andproblematize the translation strategies deployed by Thilda Kemal and to try and findanswers to the two leading questions of this study: `What is the role of Thilda Kemalin the recreation of Yqar Kemal's literahue in English?` and `What are theinfluences of her translation strategies on Yqar Kemal's literature as recreated in thetarget language?`As a yardstick for comparison, Margaret E. Platon's translation of InceMemed 2 (1969), (They Burn the Thistles) (1973), is also the object of a targetorienteddescriptive analysis. Based on these case studies, Margaret Platon is seen tohave stuck closer to the norms of the source text than did Thilda Kemal, resulting ina translation that is rather `faithful` to the linguistic and cultural qualities of ihesource text. It is suggested that the fact that Thilda Kemal is Ya~aKr emal's wife andshe acted as the editor of the source texts reduced the potential authoritativeinfluence of the author on her decisions; hence allowing her to use more initiative inher translational decisions than other translators may have done.
