Abstract
This thesis focuses on the deconstructive possibilities of Atıf Yılmaz?s film Adı Vasfiye/Her Name is Vasfiye (1985) by means of the way how the director uses Vasfiye as a female element. This attitude in the film overturns different female stereotypes and periods of Turkish Cinema yet it simultaneously is trapped within phallocentric practice of image. This thesis occasionally employs Jacques Derrida?s notions of différance and center to illustrate the functions of Vasfiye as a female element of deconstruction in the film. It further demonstrates that displacement motive of female figure in the film runs the risk of remaining within the phallocentric gear. So this thesis shows that Adı Vasfiye is a film both overturning the Turkish film tradition, and maintaining phallocentric practice in Turkish Cinema.
