Insanity in the reign of Abdülhamid II: 1876-1909

Abstract

Bu çalışma II. Abdülhamid döneminde akıl hastalarının devlet nazarındaki yerlerini saptamaya çalışmaktadır. Bu çalışmadaki temel mesele, akıl hastalarının ve akıl hastalığının II. Abdülhamid'in yardımsever ve koruyucu padişah imajı ile çelişmesidir. Çalışma boyunca akıl hastalarının ve deliliğin II. Abdülhamid'in iktidarı sırasında Osmanlı toplumu ve devleti açısından ne anlama geldiği tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Osmanlı Devleti'nin akıl hastaneleri, bu hastanelerdeki uygulamalar ile psikiyatristleri ve bu hekimlerin çalışmaları incelenmiştir. Dolayısıyla, deliliğin ve delilerin II. Abdülhamid dönemindeki durumları netleştirilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın temelini oluşturan birinci el kaynaklar şunlardır: Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivinde bulunan Zaptiye ve Dahiliye Nezaretlerinin kayıtları, Osmanlı psikiyatristlerinin notları ve Servet-i Fünun'da basılmış yazılardır.

This study tried to identify the status of insane in the mind of the state during the Abdülhamid II's reign. The main issue of this study is the contradiction between the position of the insane and insanity in the Abdülhamid's era and his charitable and protector sultan image. In this regard, the meaning of insanity and the insane in the mind of the Ottoman society and the Ottoman Empire during the era of Abdülhamid II has been questioned. The Ottoman asylums, the practices in these asylums, the Ottoman psychiatrists and their studies have been analyzed. Therefore, the position of the insane and insanity in Abdülhamid II's era has been clarified. The primary sources that are the basis of this study are the official documents written by the Security and Internal Affairs in the Prime Minister Ottoman Archive, the notes of the Ottoman psychiatrists, and the papers published in Servet-i Fünun.
