Nyssalı Gregory`nin asketizm anlayışı

Abstract

Nyssalı Gregory, dördüncü yüzyılda Kapadokya'nın Nyssa kasabasında piskoposluk yapmış bir azizdir. Nyssalı Aziz Gregory bir piskopos olmasının yanında bir teolog ve manastırcılık üzerine çalışmalar yapan bir ilim adamıdır. Pagan felsefesi üzerine yaptığı derin çalışmaları ve bu birikimi Hıristiyanlıkta mecz etmesi sebebiyle ona felsefeyi Hıristiyanlaştıran piskopos yakıştırması yapılmıştır. Aile fertlerinin, bilhassa ağabeyi Basileus'un, etkisiyle asketik hayata adım atmıştır. Basileus ve Gregory Anadolu'da asketizmin kurumsallaşmasına önayak olmuş ve manastırcılık deyince akla gelen isimler olmuşlardır. İki kardeş bu yolla ortodoks bir manastırcılık anlayışı ikame etmeye çalışmıştır. Aziz Gregory'nin azsketizmle ilgili yazdığı eserler onun bu konudaki düşüncelerini anlamak için önemlidir. Asketizme neden ihtiyaç duyulur sorusuyla başlayan Gregory'nin asketik düşüncesi; bekaret, ruhun tekâmülü, ruhun tanrısal tabiatla özdeşleşmesi gibi temel kavramlar etrafında şekillenmiştir. Onun asketizm anlayışının prensipleri ve asketik yaşamın pratiğine dair yönlendirmeleri de bu kapsamda değerlendirilmelidir. Onun asketizm öğretisi manastır hayatını tercih eden keşişlere bir dizi tavsiyeyi de ihtiva eder.

Gregory of Nyssa was bishop of Nyssa in Cappadocia in the fourth century. He is a prominent theologian and ascetic who contributed to the establishment of ascetic theology and monasticism. Due to his in depth studies on pagan philosophy and employment of this tradition in explicating Christian doctrine he is called `the bishop who Christianized philosophy.`Gregory took on ascetic life under the influence of his family members especially his elder brother Basil of Caesarea. These two brothers became the pioneers of institutionalizing of asceticism in Asia Minor; they established through monasticism an orthodox type of ascetic life. Gregory's ascetic writings are primary sources for an understanding of this enterprise of orthodox asceticism. In these, Gregory explicates first and foremost the need for an ascetic life and then continues to explain the main concepts of asceticism such as virginity, perfection of the soul, the identification of the soul with the divine. His reconstruction of the principles of the ascetic life and instructions on the practice of ascetic life should be understood within this context.
