T In this thesis, the delta modulation (DM) is analized and the delta modulation systems such as linear DM, adaptive DM with a one bit memory and continiously variable slope DM systems are designed and constructed in laboratory conditions. Jayant's adaption technique is used to design the linear delta modulation and the adaptive delta modulation with a one bit memory. The system works as both linear delta modulator and adaptive delta modulator with a one bit memory by changing some of the parameters. The MC 3517 chip produced by Motorola Company is used for the design of the continiously variable slope delta modulation. Designed systems are builded in a box in such a way that the necessary signals can be taken out from the provided terminals. The signal / noise ratio measurements are taken and a comparison is made between the different delta modulations by the application of test signals to the system. In adaptive delta modulation with a one bit memory, signal / noise ratio increased +5dBu with respect to linear delta modulation. In continiously variable delta modulation, the signal / noise ratio increased +10dBu with respect to linear delta modulation and +5dBu with respect to adaptive delta modulation with a one bit memory. Key words: Delta Modulation, Adaptive Delta Modulation, Continiously Variable Slope Delta Modulation Science Code: 609.02.06 Total number of pages: 153 Supervisor: Yrd. Doç. Dr. Halis Çakıcı
