T Nosocomial infections are important worldwide problem. A prevalence study was performed prospectively, in Dicle University Hospital (DUH) from January 1, 1997 through December 31, 1997. The incidence of nosocomial infections was found 4.31%. Nosocomial infections were seen frequently in the department of urology (20.7%), internal medicine (15.0%), general surgery (14.1%), burn unit (12.4%), orthopedics (10.7%), pediatrics (6.2%), neurology (5.7%), neurosurgery (4.8%), cardiovascular surgery (3.2%) and pediatric surgery (2.1%). The urinary tract (42.0%) and surgical wound infections (28.2%) were seen the most prevalent of all. They were followed by skin infections (10.0%), bacteremia (6.4%), sepsis (5.8%) and pneumonia (4.8%). The most prevalent microorganisms were E. coli (29%), Pseudomanas spp (20%), S. aureus (14%), Klebsiella spp. (11%), Enterobacter spp (10%), S. epidermidis (3%). The mortality rate of all patients hospitalized in DUH was reported is 7.99%. This rate was found 1 1.58 % in cases with nosocomial infections, and 8.27% in the control group who had similar primary diseases. Mortality rates and mean hospitalization time of our cases with nosocomial infections were found statistically different in all patients hospitalized in the DUH (p<0.05, pO.OOl) and the control group (p<0.005, pO.0001). 40en_US
