Abstract
Nowadays, composite materials have started to take the place of conventional metals and metal alloys with superior properties such as easy processing, affordability, lightness, superior thermal stability, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. As a result, the importance of the composite materials has been increasing in the industry and various composite materials comprising different matrix and reinforcement components with superior properties are being developed. In recent years, production and usage of polymeric nanocomposite materials including nano scale particles are one of the most important research field. On the other hand, with increasing environmental awareness and the requirement of environment protection, development of the methods realizing recycling and utilization of wastes as a source of secondary raw material has become essentially significant subjects. In this thesis, it was aimed to produce nanocomposites containing nano scale clay, boron, zeolite and pumice particles with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) polymer. In the production of nanocomposites, recyled PET polymers with two different forms (broken and chips) of the matrix element and various reinforcing elements (clay, boron, zeolite, pumice) was used. rPET polymers and nano-particles (3% weight ratio) were mixed by melt blending method in the twin-screw extruder. In the thesis, four different nanoclays (Cloisite 10A, 15A, 20A and 30B) were used. Nanocomposites samples were produced in the form of chips and morphological and thermal properties of the samples were analyzed and, the distribution of the particles in polymer structure and changes in thermal properties of the samples were evaluated. In following part of the thesis, composite samples were obtained by injection molding of nanocomposite samples and tensile and ultrasonic wave tests were done. In the last part of the thesis, multifilament fibers were spun clay-nanocomposite samples by melt spinning method. In order to determine the effect of clay particles on yarn properties, surface structure of the fibres, tensile properties and tensile properties after boiling were tested. In addition, limiting oxygen index (LOI) was measured to study the flame properties of the fibres and air permeability was tested to analyze the effect of clay particles on fibre surface. As a result of the thesis, it was determined that the distribution of clay, boron, zeolite and pumice particles within the polymer matrix has significant influence on the various nanocomposite properties. In addition to homogeny distribution of the particles, the type of the particles affects the nanocomposite characteristics. At the end of the present thesis, it was obtained the findings and gained experience about the production possibility of functional materials from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) polymer.
