Abstract
In this thesis, recycled needled nonwoven surfaces, obtained from polyester textile wastes (250, 500 and 1000 g/m2) and polyester waste bottles (250, 500 and 750 g/m2), were reinforced with electrospun polyurethane (PU) nanofibers to form composite and sandwich materials in order to overcome both noise and waste problems. As a result of nanofiber production optimization studies, 296.5 and 509.9 nm diameter nanofibers were produced from the selected 13% and 15% PU concentrations, respectively. These nanofibers were produced for different time periods to reinforce the nonwovens. Sound absorption coefficients (SAC) of the produced materials were measured and noise reduction coefficients (NRC) were calculated. The effects of material structure, nanofiber diameter and nanofiber production time on SAC and NRC values were investigated. In addition, the relationship between air permeability, thickness and weight of nonwovens and NRC values were investigated. According to the results, nanofibers provided more effective sound absorption than nonwoven surfaces in lower frequency ranges. SAC values for thicker nanofibers were measured higher than that of finer nanofibers however SACs for finer nanofibers were higher at lower frequency ranges resulting in higher NRCs for finer fibers. As the material thickness and nanofiber membrane thickness increased, more effective sound absorption was provided at lower frequencies. While the NRC values of some of the composite structures obtained by nanofibre reinforcement were increased by more than 100%, it was found that the sandwich structures had a smaller increase or even a decrease in the NRC values of some materials. As a result of nanofibre reinforcement, NRC values of nonwoven surfaces obtained from bottle wastes increased more than those produced from textile wastes. The NRC value of H250-15120 obtained by the addition of 15120 coded nanofiber to the nonwoven surface with a value of 0.205 has increased by 112.9% to 0.437. It is thought that the materials produced in this thesis have the potential to contribute to economy, environment and sustainability with the advantage of finding a higher value added usage areas to wastes.
