Abstract
Bir edebi tür olarak Oluşum Romanı her dönem ve her kültürde yazarlarıcezbetmeyi sürdürmektedir. Bir karakterin çocukluğundan yetişkinliğine uzananyaşantısını ve zihinsel gelişimini izlemek farklı dönemlerden ve farklı uluslardanyazarların tekrar tekrar ele aldığı bir konudur. Bu edebi tür, postmodernizm dönemindede pek çok yazarın kurgusal dünyasında önemli bir yere sahiptir. Ancak postmodernizmçerçevesinde, kahramanın yaşamı eski dönemlere göre farklı bir şekilde ele alınmaktadır.Oluşum kahramanının gelişimini; Michael Cunningham, Ali Bader ve Graham Swift gibipostmodern yazarların romanlarında görmek mümkündür. Bu çalışma üç postmodernoluşum romanını incelemektedir: bunlar Michael Cunningham'ın Saatler, Ali Bader'inTütün Bekçisi ve Graham Swift'in Su Diyari adlı romanlarıdır. Seçilen bu romanlar, farklıülkelerden ve kültürel arka planlardan gelen yazarlar tarafından kaleme alınmışolmalarından dolayı önemlidir.Bu çalışma 6 bölüme ayrılmaktadır. Birinci bölüm, çalışmanın girizgahbölümüdür. İkinci bölüm, teorik arka planı sunmakta olup iki alt bölüme ayrılmaktadır.İlk alt bölüm oluşum romanı kavramını ve tarih içerisindeki gelişimini ele almaktadır.İkinci alt bölüm ise seçilen kurgu eserler üzerinden postmodernizmi ele almaktadır.Üçüncü bölüm, oluşum kahramanının zaman ve mekan içerisindeki gelişimine değinerekSaatler adlı eseri postmodern bir oluşum romanı olarak incelemektedir. Dördüncü bölüm,Ali Bader'in Tütün Bekçisi (2008) adlı eserini, sanatçının üç farklı isim ve kimlik altındasanatsal gelişiminin birbirini izleyen üç safhasını temsil eden üç farklı isim ve kimlikaltında üç farklı yaşam sürdüğü bir postmodern oluşum romanı olarak ele almaktadır.Beşinci bölüm ise Graham Swift'in Su Diyari adlı romanını postmodern bireyin kendisinive dünyayı anlamak için giriştiği sonsuz mücadeleyi yansıtan postmodern bir oluşumromanı olarak incelemektedir.Bu çalışma; oluşum romanının Cunningham'ın Saatler, Bader'in Tütün Bekçisive Swift'in Su Diyari adlı romanlarında nasıl uygulandığını ve her birinin farklıpsikolojik, manevi, varoluşsal ve kültürel sorunları nasıl ele aldığını incelemeyihedeflemektedir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Romanlarinin, Postmodern, Saatler, Tütün Bekçisi, SuDiyari Bildungsroman as a literary genre never stops appealing to writers throughout theages and across cultures. The subject of tracing the life and mental development of acharacter from childhood to adulthood has been repeatedly tackled by writers of differentages and nations. In the age of postmodernism this type of novel still holds an importantplace in the fictional world of many writers. Though the treatment of the bildung hero'slife differs from that of previous ages, one could trace the development of the bildunghero in the novels of such postmodernist writers as Michael Cunningham, Ali Bader andGraham Swift. This study aims to analyze three postmodern Bildungsroman: The Hoursby Michael Cunningham, The Tobacco Keeper by Ali Bader, and Waterland by GrahamSwift. The selected novels for this study are important since the novels are written byauthors from different countries and cultural backgrounds.The study falls into five chapters and a conclusion. Chapter one is an introductionto the study, Chapter two provides a theoretical background and is divided into twosections. The first section deals with the concept of the Bildungsroman and itsdevelopment through history. Section two is devoted to the discussion of postmodernismwith special reference to selected fiction. The third chapter examines The Hours as apostmodernist Bildungsroman with reference to the bildung heros' development in spaceand time. The fourth chapter is devoted to Ali Bader's The Tobacco Keeper (2008) andits description as a postmodernist Bildungsroman in which the artist (violinist) lives threedifferent lives under three different names and identities which constitute three successivestages of his artistic development. Chapter five examines the Waterland by Graham Swiftas a postmodernist Bildungsroman which reflects the postmodern individual's infinitequest to understand himself and the world.The present study aims to trace and analyze the employment of the Bildungsromangenre in Cunningham's The Hours and Bader's The Tobacco Keeper, Swift's TheWaterland and how each of them conveys different psychological, spiritual, existentialand cultural problems.Keywords: Bildungsroman, postmodernism, The Hours, The Tobacco Keeper,Waterland
