Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the palynostratigraphy and palynofacies of the Miocene Units in the Adana Basin (Eastern Mediterranean) and to establish a biostratigraphic framework for future studies. This study is a pioneering work in the Adana Basin, regarding the dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy. In this study, seven stratigraphic sections comprising the Köpekli, Cingöz, and Güvenç formations were measured and 482 samples were analyzed based on palynomorphs. According to the first and last occurrences and the acme of some selected taxa, nine biozones were identified from the late Burdigalian to earliest Tortonian. In order to apply a worldwide biostratigraphic correlation based on dinoflagellates, the biozones defined in this study have been compared with previously published dinocyst zonations in Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, NW Europe and the eastcoast U.S. The palynological analysis reveals that the recorded dinocyst events (e.g. Labyrinthodinium truncatum, Cerebrocysta poulsenii, Unipontidinium aquaeductus) occurred chronostratigraphically older in Turkey than those in Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, NW Europe and the eastcoast U.S.A paleo-environmental model was created for Köpekli, Cingöz and Güvenç formations based on proximal-distal trends of dinoflagallates. Based on the quantitative distribution patterns of dinocysts, a relative sea level curve is constructed and correlated with the eustatic sea level curve of Haq et al. (1987). The curve plotted for Miocene dinocysts in this study reflects striking similarities to the general trend of the eustatic sea level curve of Haq et al. (1987).
