Abstract
SUMMARYCinema was born after all the other arts. So It benefits them but never remains as animitation of them. From all the arts, cinema especially benefits from the literature. On theother hand, Turkish cinema isn't different from the world cinema. It has adapted a lot ofnovels especially from Turkish literature and we are witnessed to writers and directorscorporation.In this thesis I attempt to make a difference between literature and cinema. But, theanalysis focuses upon the adaptation of the literature to cinema and how this adaptation isaffected from social background of Turkey. At the same time, the thesis describes the historyof Turkish cinema.The first year of Turkish cinema had adapted less novels according to other years. Affectof the theatre is the reason for it. In the years of the beginnig of Turkish Republic, anadaptation is standing out.The period between 1950 and 1960, there are too many adaptation from popular novelswhich are sentimental. In the novels of 1950s, anatolian village life is representred but therepresentation came to the cinema lately.In 1960's, leftist roman narratives are seen in the movies either with their novels or withtheir screenplayers. Because censorship is less than other years and political changing in theworld. So that, the cinema reflects realities in this period. Moreover, in these years, a lot ofnovels about village are written and adapted to the cinema.In 1970, the diminishing of the importance of the agriculture in Turkish economy andincreasing immigration, the loss of interest in rural sphere, started to workers literature andworkers movies.The Turkish cinema of the 1980's and the early 1990's was depressive because of 1980stroke and television. Hopeless, nostalgy in cinema is caused from them.
