Abstract
This study investigates the decoration programs of places of worship during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II, which marked an era that bridged the early period and the classical period in architecture during the formative years of the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Bayezid II made significant contributions to the history of Ottoman architecture with the large social complex (külliye) he had built in the capital Istanbul as well as the social complexes and mosques in Tokat, Amasya and Edirne. These buildings are important not only because they reflect the architectural tendencies of the period with regard to planning and decoration but also because of their function in public life. It is of notice that as the period progresses, the decoration programs diversify in line with architectural developments. During the reign of Bayezid II, as the plans of the mosques and other religious buildings as well as public buildings change significantly, the decoration programs develop especially with the application of stone- and woodwork. Although the reconstruction activities of the period span a very wide geography, this study is limited to examples from Tokat, Amasya, Edirne and Istanbul. Despite major damages in the buildings of the period due to many disasters such as fires, earthquakes and floods, it has been possible to preserve some of the original characteristics of these buildings, thanks to repairs and conservation work carried out in various periods. The following ornamental features, which survived as part of the functional elements of the buildings, have been examined in detail: stonework, woodwork, plasters, metalwork, tiles and calligraphy. Although the period is marked by structures of which Bayezid II was the patron, the statesmen of the period also built important places of worship in the cities under consideration in this study. Furthermore, following the conquest of Istanbul, many churches were converted into mosques and Islamic prayer rooms. Therefore, these converted buildings also have certain applications that parallel
