Abstract
SUMMARY It is very difficult to make a study on Turkish phonology based on Turkish texts written with Arabic letters since they do not have signs how to pronounce the words. Therefore grammar books and dictionaries written in European languages in Latin character, since they show both Arabic orthography and pronunciation in Latin characters, carry great importance to make such study. In this work we wanted to study phonetic system of the L8th century of Turkish. We did this with taking CARBOGNANO's Gramatica Turca and VİGUİER's Elements de la Langue Turque both of which have been published at the end of the century as sources. We also used as H. DEVELİ and M. DUMAN's study on EVLİYA ÇELEBİ's SEYAHATNAME (travel account) as a source because he had lived in and written his work a century earlier. It is importance comes in his writting some of the words as tehy were pronounced rather then in their grammatical forms. İn the beginning, first we tried to explore relationship between orthography and pronunciation of words in Turkish. Later we studied the 18th century Turkihs phonetics under five heading: Assimilation, Elision, Anaptyxis, Alterations and Modifications of Sounds. We also made lists of words showing them Arabic orthograpy, Gramatica Turea's pronunciation and today's usage. For this reason, it his hoped that this study will also serve as reference for those who want to transcribe Ottoman Turkish text into modern Turkish, i.e. in Latin characters. ¦^fıKKtfû***
