Abstract
153 9. SUMMARYı The study is planned to define the problems of married women by determining their approach to sexuality regarding sexual life, to find out their need for counseling and to determine the health team members approach to sexuality who are supposed to provide service of counseling on sexuality to individual, family and community. The study includes a total of 200 women who have applied to gynecology and family planning polyclinics of Okmeydanı Number 1, Uskudar Number 2, Çapa Number 3 and Küçükyalı Maternal Child Health and Family Planning Centers, which are on service as associated to Istanbul City Health Directorate, and 50 health team members who volunteered to join and are on duty at these units. The women are married for at least one year and living together with their partners, neither have given birth nor miscarriage, nor had abortion (curettage) for at least 6 months and their genital organs are found out as healthy by gynecological examinations. The women who satisfy with the conditions set for our universe and applied between May 10 and September 30, 1994, have been selected by simple random sampling method, reserving an application period of 5 weeks for each of above mentioned centers. The members of health teams composed of gynecologists, family physicians, practitioners, nurses and154 midwifes serving at the gynecology related units of the centers at these dates, who have voluntered to join are included to this study. The figures of the women and members of health teams have been obtained by interview from regarding sex life characteristics of the women. Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) women form, interview form aimed for evaluation of health team members approach to sexuality. It is determined that among the women included to our study, 46% them have expressed sexual problems. Between the troubled and normal group we could not find any statistically meaningful differences regarding data related to demographic, obstetrical characteristics, habits, and health conditions. That is, two groups are equivalent. We find out that, the women who constitute the normal group compared to troubled one, have experienced more positive emotions, were closer to other sex before marriage, are more active at starting sexual relation, are able to easily prefer different positions, and usulally achieve orgasm during sexual intercourse and according to GRISS, have more satisfactory sexual relations. Also, it is determined that, the health team members who participated in the study, have insufficient knowledge about sexual matters, their ideas and manners regarding sexuality are affected by traditional structure of community and they are insensitive to sexual problems. 153 9.
