Abstract
Constantinople, where was uncared for a long period, had been re-constructed in the frame of Islamic principles and customary after it was conquered by Mehmet II. The destruction and importance of the neighborhood which was established around Ilyas Bey Mosque, it has been in Cerrahpasha in modern day Istanbul, founded by the first butcher of the Palace during Mehmet II will be held in this study. Ilyas Bey contributed not only in the conquest, he was also an important figure in the construction of the city. Ilyas the Butcher Mosque is one of the beautiful examples of the mosque which is founded by the member of the praised army (nimel'-ceysh). The hardship and difficulties the neighborhood and the mosque faced up was sort of a short summary of the Ottoman Istanbul. Before Ilyas Bey died in 1482, he had founded a simple and functional mosque, which will be called by his name, in the 12th region of Constantinople where there were not so many buildings at that time. With all waqfs of the mosque that were seen first in 1493, it became a typical mosque in Ottoman neighborhood where was established around it. He had buried in front of the mosque for a long time. The area turned into a cemetery of the neighborhood after the very beginning of the 18th century. Since the 19th century, there was an urban revolution in Istanbul under the impact of Europe. By this revolution, many mosques and neighborhoods have been deconstructed. Demolition and destruction of the nimel'-ceysh mosques and neighborhoods have still done since the new Republic was established.
