Abstract
Current account is current transactions of a country with the rest of the world. It is an economic indicator showing financial needs and saving tendencies of a country. In this dissertation, current account dynamics are explained by using a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model. The effects of productivity, government expenditure, risk-free interest rate, liquidity, import inflation and export inflation shocks are shown by obtaining impulse response functions. DSGE model is calibrated by balance of payments data of Turkey. In addition to the theoretical findings with a DSGE model, a Factor-Augmented Vector Auto Regression (FAVAR) model is used with economic data from Turkish economy and world commodity price indexes to obtain empiric results for current account dynamics in Turkish economy. The impact of various factors that include crude oil prices, import and export price indexes, industrial production index, USD-TL exchange rate, non-fuel price index, TCMB interest rate and real effective exchange rate have been studied by obtaining impulse response functions. Findings from both models support each other and are in accordance with theoretical framework.
