Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the bond strength of fiber-reinforced and zirconium posts cemented with resin cements. 240 maxillar intact human canines were selected for this study. The crowns of each root were sectioned 2 mm above the cemento-enamel junction. The teeth were further divided into 2 groups of 120 teeth following endodontic treatment. Root canal preparations were performed for quartz fiber-reinforced (DT Light Post) (n=120) and zirconium posts (CosmoPost) (n=120). The groups were divided into 6 subgroups in order to receive following 5 different surface treatments; 1)airborne particle abrasion, 2) MDP containing primer/silane coupling agent mixture application, 3)silane coupling agent application, 4)tribochemical silica coating, 5)airborne particle abrasion and MDP containing primer/silane coupling agent mixture application. The posts of the sixth subgroups received no treatment to serve as control groups. Each group was further divided into 2 groups of 10 specimens and cemented with either MDP containing resin cement or Bis-GMA based resin cement. All teeth were then embeded into acryclic resin molds and a diamond saw was used to prepare 4 sections through post-dentin specimens each of 2 mm thickness. Push-out tests were performed at a cross-head speed of 0,5 mm/min. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, Student?s test and Tukey multiple comparison test (p<0,001). Characteristic debonded failure surfaces were examined with SEM.Tribochemical silica coating and airborne particle abrasion followed by MDP containin primer/silane coupling agent mixture application, resulted with the highest bond strength values in quartz fiber-reinforced post groups regardless of the cement system used (p<0,001). The similar highest values were also found for the zirconium post groups (p<0,001) wvhereas MDP containing resin cement revealed statistically higher values for zirconia groups in which the posts were treated with MDP containing primer/silane coupling agent (p<0,001). Within the limitations of this in vitro study ıt can be concluded that different surface treatments, cement types and physical characteristics of the post systems have an effect on the bond strength of quartz fiber-reinforced and zirconium posts cemented with adhesive resin cements. The results of this study could also serve as effective measures for clinical applications.
