Abstract
ABSTRACT THE EFFECTS OF MINERAL NUTRIENTS AND GROWTH REGULATORS ON THE MECHANISM OF SEQUENTIAL LEAF SENESCENCE IN Helianthus annuus L. The effects of mineral nutrients and plant growth regulators on the mechanism of sequential leaf senescence in the seedlings of Helianthus annuus were investigated. Senescence increased in seedlings which were grown in diluted Hoagland solutions, due to nitrogen deficiency for cytokinin synthesis. It has been confirmed that cytokinins, among the growth hormones, inhibited senescence, whereas indolacetic acid increased it. These observations were verified by the determinations of total nitrogen and total chlorophyll in the cotyledons. Experiments done with 14C-IAA have shown that, IAA from shoot apex was transported directly to the roots. Since IAA is known as an allosteric activators of cytokinin oxidase, it has been discussed if the IAA increases the cytokinin oxidations in the roots, and then senescence takes place in the cotyledones and older leaves, due to cytokinin deficiency.
