Abstract
XII ABSTRACT INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF AGGREGATES' PETROGRAPHY USED IN THE CONCRETE TO THE CONCRETE STRENGTH In construction the most wanted issue is the high-quality of the concrete that forms it. The two important material that take place in the composition of the concrete are cement and aggregates. Aggregates forms 65-80% of the concrete. To get a high- quality concrete the choice of aggregate, which has an important effect on fresh and strengthened concrete's performance, is very important. The characteristics of aggregates such as chemical composition, mineralogical and petrographic structure, specific gravity, strength, physical and chemical stability, pore structure, colour are related to the characteristics of the rock that they are gained from. For this reason the characteristics of the rock that the aggregates are gained from has to be well-known. This thesis comprises some physical properties of sea sand and crushed rocks that are gained by breaking of basalt and limestone, and some mechanical properties of crushed rocks. Also rocks are defined with their mineralogical and petrographic studies have done. In this thesis two concrete mixture are made by using three kinds of aggregates (Karatepe basalt, Cebeci limestone and Çatalca limestone) that have different mineralogical roots with two different cement dosage (300 kg/m3 and 400 kg/m3). The best granulometer for concrete mixtures is chosen, same kind of sand and cement are used and water/cement ratio is kept same. Unit weights of concrete mixtures are found and compression strength experiment are carried out on the cube samples gained from the produced concretes. According to the experiment results when concretes with different cement dosage, 28 day compression strengths are compared, it has seen that concrete with basalt aggregate has the highest strength. In concretes produced with Cebeci limestone and Çatalca limestone almost same strength is gained. When cement dosage is increased (400 kg/m3) it has seen that the concrete containing grey limestone is greater than the strength of the concrete containing white limestone. XIII
