Abstract
VIII SUMMARY FOCAL MECHANISM RETRIEVAL OF SMALL TO MODERATE SIZED EARTHQUAKES USING NEAR-FIELD RECORDS The focal mechanism of 24 small to moderate sized earthquakes are determined using the near-field sesmograms recorded at CSS seismic station located in Cyprus which belongs to GEOFON broadband seismic network. The near-field records are inverted using the technique developped by [4]. Here, a focal mechanism is estimated through comparison of observed and theoric seismograms. Besides the faulting mechanism, a Centroid Moment Tensor (CMT) point is determined by estimating the seismic moment and the depth of the event. Since it is still a matter of debate whether an active subduction occurs in the region, the precisly determined focal depths will provide a valuable information on the seismotectonics of the region. The results indicate that only one of the analyzed events occured beneath the crust, the depth of which is 50 km. Most of the events occur in the depth range of 20-30 km and show predominantly thrusting mechanism. The analyzed events occurred mainly to the Southwest and to the South of Cyprus. No systematics is observed on the mechanism of the events occured to the Southwest while the Southern events reveal predomintly reverse faulting suggesting a more homogenous stress field. This, in tern, suggest that this region is an active collusion zone and probably points out the border between Africa and Anatolia plates. IX
