Abstract
In this study, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/org-clay nanocomposites invarious compositions were prepared by melt processing method in a twin screwmicro-compounder (DACA) using different types of compatibilizers. Some physicalproperties of the samples were examined in detail.A commercial organo-montmorillonite (org-mmt, Cloisite® 20A) as organo-clay andtwo of maleic anhydride grafted polyethylenes (PE-g-MA) having different maleicanhydride graft ratio and three of low molecular weight oxidized polyethylene (OxPE)having various acid number were used as compatibilizers.Structural characterization and physical properties of the samples were carried out witha small amplitude ossilatory shear rheometer (ARES), Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction(XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC), Thermogravimetry (TGA), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)and Universal Tensile Test methods. Furthermore, O2 permeability of some sampleswere tested.Applying various rheological models on the data obtained from the detailed rheologicalinvestigation of the samples in linear viscoelastic region, aspect ratio of the clay layerswere determined quantitatively depending on the compatibilizer structure, amount ofclay and sample composition. Moreover, the clay aspect ratios of some samples werealso determined by investigating the mechanical and gas barrier properties of thesamples and compared with the values obtained from the other characterizationmethods. It was found that the average aspect ratio value of the clay layers is about 25 for thesample series prepared with the PE-g-MA used as compatibilizer and between 10-17 forthe sample series prepared with the OxPE depending on the compatibilizer structure. Inconsistent with the results obtained from rheological modelling of the clay aspect ratio,it was also observed from the TEM analysis of the samples that the clay dispersion inthe sample series of PE-g-MA compatibilizers is better than those of the OxPEs. It wasseen that the thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite samples aresignificantly enhanced with increasing of the clay and compatibilizer loading anddispersion of the clay layers. Interestingly, nanocomposite samples prepared with theOxPE showed better improvements than those prepared with the PE-g-MA in gasbarrier properties of the samples.Based on the data obtained and the theoretical approaches in literature, ?structurepropertyrelationships? of the samples were evaluated in detail taking into account ofthe polymer/compatibilizer, filler/compatibilizer and filler/filler interactions. As a result,it was considered that investigation of the rheological behavior of polymer/claynanocomposites is a very crucial characterization method to quantify clay dispersioninto polymer phase and characterize the micro-structures of the samples. Moreover, contradictions between the assumptions of the theoretical ?tortuous path? model whichdefines the improvements in gas barrier properties of the polymer/clay nanocompositesand experimental results were discussed.
