Abstract
Silver and Ag-0.53 wt. %Ge, Ag-1.19 wt. %Ge, Ag-2.22 wt. % Ge alloys were prepared with investment casting and their mechanical and microstructural properties were investigated in as cast and cold worked states. Also sterling silver and Ag-6.06% Cu-1.38% Ge alloys prepared by investment casting and their microstructural, mechanical and tarnishing properties were investigated. In as cast state the hardness values of silver and Ag-0.53 wt. % Ge, Ag-1.19 wt. % Ge, Ag-2.22 wt. % Ge alloys were 25.3, 30.4, 33.5 and 35.5 HV, the tensile strengths were 104.22, 85.90, 64.74 and 51.01 MPa and elongations were 27.89 %, 19.87 %, 13.43 % and 7.63 %, respectively. The silver and Ag-0.53 wt. % Ge, Ag-2.22 wt. % Ge alloys were cold worked by approximately 50%. In cold worked state hardness values were 07.7, 124.0 and 146.6 HV, the tensile strengths were 170.81, 223.73 and 320.21 MPa and the elongations were 2.97%, 0.18% and 0.36%, respectively. The hardness, tensile strength and elongation of sterling silver in as cast state were determined as 71.5 HV, 148.55 MPa, and 16.99%, respectively. Also Ag-6.06 wt. %Cu-1.38 wt. %Ge alloy?s hardness , tensile strength and elongation in as cast state were 69.2 HV, 191.26 MPa and 13.96 %, respectively. Because of under cooling, eutectic structure was existed in sterling silver?s microstructure and intermetallic Cu5Ge phase was founded in the Ag-6.06 wt. %Cu-1.38 wt. %Ge alloy?s microstructure. The tarnish resistance of Ag-6.06Cu%-1.38Ge% alloys was higher than the tarnish resistance of sterling silver.
