Abstract
The objective of the thesis can be briefly outlined as derivation of the focal mechanisms using digital seismic data and their seismotectonic implications. The objective is realized in three steps, namely, Moment Tensor Inversion, Stress Tensor Inversion and Seismotectonic Implications. The algorithm developed here locates the earthquake, estimates its size and derives a focal mechanism without need for any extra software. Besides the general SAC (Goldstein, 2008) format the software recognizes automatically five different formats of strong motion data. The sequential data processing includes estimation of the signal quality, automatic seismic phase reading, estimation of the origin time and its location, estimation of its size (MD, ML and MS) and estimation of a fault plane solution through moment tensor inversion. In addition, the software includes a program developed by Suetsuge (1998) to estimate the fault plane solution of earthquakes using first motion polarity data. The users can construct their own take-off angle tables to be used for the focal mechanism estimations or can use directly the take-off angles calculated during earthquake location process. The software to retrieve the focal mechanisms of earthquakes through moment tensor inversion (MTI) method uses both velocity and strong motion records. This software has been under test and has been utilized by many researches thus the ambiguities on the results were significantly reduced. Meanwhile, tens of solutions obtained by the Harvard group where compared with the ones we obtained and the result was a satisfactory. The 3-component broadband data used in the applications are retrieved from the digital data archive of Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) National Earthquake Monitoring Center (NEMC) while the 3-componet strong motion data were retrieved from the data archive of Earthquake Research Departement (ERD) of the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement. Most of the events we analyzed belongs to the period starting from 2004 because the density of the instruments increased considerably since then and the threshold magnitude was Mw=3.5. Special care was taken for the events taking part in the regions where we planned to derive stress tensors. The results show that the frequency band including higher frequncies yield better results for the M<4 events recorded at stations closer to the epicenter. In total, we obtained solutions for approximately 600 earthquakes using the MTI method and combining these solutions with the ones given at different catalogues forms a data set that we used to estimate the stress tensors acting at 18 different regions. The results of this analysis were mapped to show the orientations of the maximum and minimum principal stress directions so as to reveal the spatial stress pattern to be used for tectonic implications of the focal mechanisms. In this respect, the spatial distribution of the maximum principal stress axis ?1 and the minimum principal stress axis ?3 are displayed along with the GPS vectors. This illustration indicates that in SW Turkey where the tensile forces dominate the tectonics, the ?3 axes are parallel to the GPS vectors. On the contrary, in Eastern Turkey where compression is dominant, the ?1 axes are parallel to the GPS vectors. It is well known that the causative for the tensile forces in Western Anatolia and Aegean regions is the subduction process along the Hellenic and Cyprus arcs while the compressive forces are generated by the collision process at the tip of the Arabian plate. Considering these facts, our results are mainly a confirmation of what is known but the orientations of the principal stress axes for the Adana-Hatay and East Anatolian fault zone suggest that these regions are influenced mainly from the motion of African plate rather than the Arabian plate.
