Abstract
In this study, recovery of biologically treated pulp and paper mill wastewater by using the nanofiltration based advanced treatment scheme, was aimed. The reasons of flux declines were investigated and the effect of filtration conditions on the permeate quality and membrane fouling were examined.Membrane screening study was performed to determine the suitable membrane process for first step of treatment scheme. For this purpose, membrane performance (pollutant removal efficiencies) and membrane fouling (flux declines, contact angle measurements, pore plugging models) were evaluated together. For the screened two membranes, the effects of filtration conditions such as pH, temperature, transmembrane pressure and VRF on the removal and fouling mechanisms of the membranes were investigated. Optimum filtration conditions were determined by using Taguchi experimental design method. The membrane performance and membrane fouling were calculated by using the model equation, under the determined optimum filtration conditions. Also, ANOVA was performed to see whether the filtration conditions were statistically significant or not and to determine the effect levels. pH value of wastewater was found to be the most important factor for FM UP005 while transmembrane pressure was found to be the most important factor for FM NP010 on the flux decline caused by membrane fouling. Membrane fouling was also evaluated with AFM and SEM measurements. The membrane type (FM NP010) and optimum filtration condition (pH=10; T=250C; ?P=12 bars; VRF=4) for the first step of treatment were determined by considering the experimental results. Under these conditions, 91% COD, 97% SAC254, 92% total hardness, 53% chloride, 98% sulphate and 58% conductivity removal were obtained. The flux decline caused by membrane fouling was decreased to 11% with determining optimum filtration conditions. At the second step of the treatment, the permeate obtained from the first step was treated by using a tight nanofiltration membrane (FM NP030) under different transmembrane pressure. Transmembrane pressure value which provides permeate quality like process water was determined as 28 bars. In addition, flux declines were evaluated. Finally, the differences in the removal efficiency and flux decline of the membranes which are used for the first and second steps of the treatment were investigated in the case of wastewater treatment with the same volume and quality. Also, flux recovery was obtained at high rates with chemical cleaning procedure (94%-98%). In this study, it was shown that the process water could be obtained from the biologically treated pulp and paper mill wastewater by using the two steps nanofiltration process (FM NP010+FM NP030).
