Abstract
Uygulanan ham petrol konsantrasyonlarından elde edilen yüksek biyodegradasyon yüzdeleri A. filiculoides bitkisinin ham petrolle kirlenmiş tatlı su alanlarının fitoremediasyonunda etkili olabileceğini önermektedir. The phytoremediation of freshwater resources contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons is an environment-friendly promising approach. In this study, the phytoremediation capacity of petroleum hydrocarbons of Azolla filiculoides Lam was investigated. The plants were grown in nitrogen-free Hoagland nutrient solution under greenhouse conditions. The plants in the experimental group were grown in the mediums containing 0.005%, 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% crude oil for 15 days. The increase in fresh weight, root length and number of roots were used to measure growth rate. The effect of the plants on the degradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons was gaged by analyzing the amount of hydrocarbons in the experimental and control media and in the plant samples.Altough the growth of plants were not too much influenced in the medium containing 0.005% and 0.01% crude oil, the presence of the oil in the growth medium from 0.05% and 0.1% insignificantly reduced the growth, however the higher concentrations of crude oil significantly retarded the growth; e.g., 0.2% oil in the media reduced growth approximately 50% relative control media, and the oil concentrations of crude oil 0.3% and higher the majority of plants were killed. The results from the percentage of plant growth, fresh weight increase and root growth showed that the tolerance of A. filiculoides plants to crude oil could be between 0.1% and 0.2%. In comparison to control values of the biodegradation of total aliphatic and aromatic (phenathrene) hydrocarbons between 0.05% - 0.2% oil concentrations, respectively, 94% - 73% and 81% - 77% was high, between 0.3% - 0.5% oil concentrations respectively 71% - 63% and 75% - 71%. The high biodegradation rates suggested that A. filiculoides plants could be used for the phytoremediation of crude oil contaminated freshwater resources.
