Abstract
In the industrial gas separation processes such as the separation of oxygen and nitrogen from the air or the hydrogen separation from carbonmonoxide, methane or nitrogen require relatively high energy consumption. Thus, developments of more economical system alternatives and methods that enable the ease of management have been attracted more importance in this area. Separation of gas mixtures by the membrane processes has emerged as an alternative route to the conventional separation techniques (such as distillation, absorption and adsorption) and gained considerable attention in the last 25 years. Polyimide membranes have drawn much attention for gas separation processes since they provide high performances such as high thermal stability and chemical resistance and superior mechanical properties. In addition to such superior characteristics of polyimides, many studies have been conducted on the development of modified polyimide membranes which exhibit improved permeability and permselectivity performance. In the first part of this study, polyamic acid solutions were prepared with the reaction between various dianhydrates (BTDA, PMDA, 6FDA) and a diamine (ODA) and the polyamic acid solutions were casted onto a glass plate with an applicator (200 µm). Then, the polyimide membranes were prepared by thermal imidization method. Copolyimide structures were also obtained by using of two different dianhydrates, BTDA and PMDA. Effects of different dianhydrates on the characteristic structure of membranes were investigated. In the second part of the study, new comonomers containing silica groups were synthesized for examining the effect of addition of silica groups into the polyimid and copolyimide structures. Afterwards, siloxane modified polyimide membranes were synthesized by using of these new comonomers. The structural properties of these polyimide membranes were characterized with FTIR analysis. Thermal properties, thermo-oxidative behaviors and mechanical properties of the polyimide membranes were analyzed by thermogravimetric (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. Sample morphology and particle distribution within the polyimide structure were characterized by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, permeability and ideal selectivity values of the membranes were determined with the gas permeability measurements, for the N2, O2 and CO2 gases.
