Abstract
Designing earthquake resistant structures is the best precaution to minimize the losses caused by earthquakes. New approaches, such as passive control, semi-active control, active control and hybrid systems have emerged when solutions of classical methods proved to be insufficient. The effectiveness of seismic isolation against earthquakes, which is classified as part of passive control systems, is proven by earlier studies and is being used increasingly in the world as well as in Turkey. However, the near fault earthquakes threaten the safety of seismically isolated buildings. Large base displacements may be realized and the superstructure performance may be affected in the seismically isolated buildings which are exposed to the near fault earthquakes including long period high amplitude velocity pulses. The base displacement should be limited due to the factors such as the isolator displacement capacity and the seismic gap requirements. To overcome this problem, additional damping may be used. However, this may lead to increases in floor accelerations. In case the isolation period coincides with the pulse period the situation may worsen. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the negative effects of pulse-period coinciding with the isolation period and the effectiveness of additional damping in this situation by taking into account the ratio between the pulse period and isolation period. In this study, different isolation systems with different post-yield isolation periods, characteristic force ratios and additional damping ratios and synthetic near fault earthquakes with different pulse periods, number of pulses and fault distances are used.
