Abstract
Heat exchangers are devices that allow heat transfer between two or more fluids. Heat exchangers are used in heating, cooling, air-conditioning, chemical industry, vehicles, thermal reactors and almost all production areas. The design and optimization of heat exchangers that may have various types depending on their usage area, carry a great importance. One of the most widely used heat exchangers in industry, is shell and tube heat exchangers. The aim of this study is to apply a random search method, genetic algorithm, to minimize the total cost function that includes the initial investment and the energy consumption costs. For the specified purpose, hot fluid allocation, number of tube passes, tube layout, tube outer diameter, shell outer diameter, baffle cut and baffle spacing are selected as the design variables and optimization of shell and tube heat exchanger is achieved taking into account the pressure drop and economic conditions. In order to apply, genetic algorithm, a search technique based on parameter coding, which is used for finding a specific data within a data group, a software with a graphical user interface is developed using FORTRAN.In this thesis, definition, types and specifications of heat exchangers are briefly mentioned. Specifications and calculations of shell and tube heat exchangers are discussed in detail. The algorithm, history, processing routine, specifications, areas of use, operators and parameters of genetic algorithm are explained. With the application of genetic algorithm, quantitively similar multiple solutions that would provide design flexibility are obtained for shell and tube heat exchangers and the results are analized.
