Abstract
ZnO sol-gel tohumlama tabakası üzerinde büyütülen nanoçubuklar arasından elde edilen en yüksek fotoakım 134 µA/cm2'dir. Fotoakım yoğunlukları g-C3N4 (1)/ ZnO örneği için 196 µA/cm2 iken CdS (30)/ZnO örneği için 2500 µA/cm2 şeklindedir. Today, the rapid depletion of fossil energy sources and increase in carbon emmisions in the World led us to investigate alternative energy sources. Solar energy is one of the most studied and abundant alternative energy sources. The sun is clean and inexhaustible. Solar cells, namely, photovoltaic cells are technology that converts solar energy into electricity. The conventional solar cells based on silicon are the most widely used due to high efficiency. Alternative technologies are searched because of high costs of silicon based cells. As an alternative, organic and anorganic-organic solar cells have favourable features, such as light weight, flexibility and potential and nowadays, investigations have focused on this field.Another tecnology which can generate electricity utilizing solar energy is provided with photoelectrochemical systems (PEC). Photoelectrochemical systems can generate hydrogen and electricity via photoelectrolysis of water by using semiconductor photoelectrodes under solar irradation. All of these studies are based onsemiconductor nanomaterials thatwere activated when they were irradiated under light. In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) seeding using two different methods were carried out on the conductive transperent glass (FTO) substrates. In the first method, the decomposition of zinc salt at high temperature and in the second method the ZnO sol-gel thin films were used. Effects of these seeding methods on the hydrothermal growth of nanorods were investigated to study photoelectrochemical activities, optical and morphological properties. The optical and morphological properties of these synthesized materials were characterized by using SEM, XRD, and DRS analysis. Photoelectrochemical activites were tested by linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry under visible light and dark. The highest photocurrent, 187 µA/cm2, was acquired from bare ZnO nanorods with seeding of the decompositon of zinc salt. The highest photocurrent, 134 µA/cm2, was achived from ZnO nanorods with the sol-gel seeding. These samples were sensitized with various ratios of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) semiconductors. Sensitization of ZnO nanorods resulted in an increase in the visible light absorption and increase in photocurrent response. The highest photocurrent was obtained from g-C3N4 (1)/ZnO nanorods and CdS (30)/ZnO nanorods. Photocurrent density value is 196 µA/cm2 for g-C3N4 (1)/ZnO sample whilst photocurrent density value is 2500 µA/cm2 for CdS (30)/ ZnO sample. In this thesis, the fabricated ZnO nanorods were used as electron transport layer in inverted type organic photovoltaic cells. P3HT (poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl)) and fullerene derivative PCBM ([6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) were used as an organic semiconductor at active layer of the photovoltaic cell. The effect of synthesis parameters on ZnO nanorods were investigated with respect to the photovoltaic cell efficiency. The synthesis parameters are the concentration of reaction precursors, reaction time and the annealing tempature after seeding. The highest efficiency was 0,38 % that was obtained from ZnO/ organic photovoltaic cells in consequence of study.
