Abstract
Within the scope of this master thesis study, a sediment core covering the Late Holocene from Lake Aktaş, a shallow alkaline soda lake in Ardahan in the Northeast Anatolian highland of Turkey, was studied for pollen analysis to reconstruct climate and vegetation characteristics of this region. The fossil pollen database was established to determine the palaeovegetation changes by examining the analysis on the core taken from the deepest of Lake Aktaş. Also, in order to determine the modern pollen influx in this study, a modified `Tauber style` pollen trap was placed around the lake in accordance with the protocol of the European Pollen Monitoring Programme (EPMP), the pollen influx on the unit surface (cm2) of the sample area was defined. At the results of these palynological analyzes on the core taken from Lake Aktaş showed that these pollen grains were identified at the family and genus level. Among these identified pollen grains, 4 Gymnospermae and 13 Angiospermae species belong to the arboreal plants and, 13 families and 7 genera belong to herbaceous plants were encountered. In the fossil pollen diagram, the pollen variety of herbaceous plants was higher than that of arboreal plants. When modern pollen data for the one-year period of 2015-2016 and pollen concentration data of the uppermost zone of the fossil pollen diagram are compared, it is seen that the herbaceous plant species dominate around Lake Aktaş. Poaceae and Juglans pollen grains in the upper zones (especially at LPAZ2) indicate that the cultivation for agriculture and commercial purposes was carried out much in this period. The decline of the pollen concentrations of Pinus and Picea towards the upper zones is a sign of deforestation. Looking at the last 685 years in the study area, it can be said that steppe vegetation is more dominant in the field. The core sediments taken from the lake for the thesis study deposited in the lower zone (LPAZ1) were more humid, while in the upper zones (LPAZ2 and LPAZ3) deposited in the period when the tendency of drought increased. 685 years ago, it is understood that in the Medieval Warm Period (MWP), more humid conditions were experienced in the high volcanic plateaus region of Northeast Anatolia. The drought tendency observed from this period reflects the cold-dry conditions in the Little Ice Age (LIA) fluctuatingly.
