vn İRRİGATİON IN THE REGİON OF THE SOUTHEAST ANATOLIAN PROJECT JAP) AND RESEARCHING OF PROBLEMS Mahmut Lezgin YALÇIN 2002/Page:71 SUMMARY This research has been carried out as a literature scanning to bring up the existing condition, le working plans and the problems that can be faced in the future of Southeast Anatolian Project SAP). In the literature scanning; the importance of GAP, the ecological and natural position, the lassification of lands, the structure of soil, the dispersal of land-ownership, the pattern of reduction, water sources and the environmental problems that irrigation may come up with has een studied. The powers for human focused, sustainable, integrated regional development Southeast knatolian Project (GAP) are agriculture and irrigation. In the region there are 22 dams some are ompleted, some are in construction or in planning and 19 hydroelectric centrals. With the GAP 1.7 jillion square meters of land will be opened to irrigation. With irrigation the agricultural potential /ill be used at the maximum level. And this will provide the economical development. In the region 3.2 million square meters of plant production, 1.2 million square meters of örest and 2.4 million square meters of pasture area exist. In the dry agriculture areas generally vheat, barley and lentil are grown. In the irrigated agriculture areas cotton, wheat and vegetables re grown. With the opening of the irrigation process to the existing agricultural areas the benefits of he project will be provided as well with some advantages and disadvantages. The important »roblem that may come up is the saltiness, which can be caused of wrong irrigation. There can be rery serious problems on environment, ecology with a wrong planning of irrigation.
